Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) was ordained to the ministry of the Congregational Church, at Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1727, after an experience of conversion. His ministry was blessed by a remarkable religious revival, which led to his writing several books on the subject minutely analysing the experience. Unwilling to permit unconverted people to receive Communion, Edwards was removed from Northampton in 1749. He then began a missionary ministry, during which time he wrote several of his most important works
